New installation - 2 questions (stable vs RC releases / home directories)

  • Hello,

Sorry for the very general title.

My setup: Dedicated web server with Ubuntu Server 12.04

    1. I want to use i-MSCP on a production server. I noticed that it say pretty much everywhere not to use the RC releases for production. So i went with the latest stable. 1.0.3.0.

After trying to install, it said that this version was not compatible with Ubuntu 12.04. I tried this : http://forum.i-mscp.net/Thread-DEV-i-mscp-for-ubuntu-precise

(copying a file) and try again. It passed this error, then i got a bunch more. I decided to give up.

    a) Is this version (1.0.3.0) really recommended for Ubuntu 12.04 ?
I also saw the post about the sources duplicates entries here: http://forum.i-mscp.net/Thread…t-duplicate-entries-error

And the user asking the question was suggested to use an RC version.

    b) So, should i just go ahead and use an RC version on a production server ?
Or is this product just not for me...

    c) If i use an RC version, what will be the update process like ?

    2. If i manage to get this on my Ubuntu setup and working, is it possible to keep the user's domains in their home directories ?

I'm asking because many panels i tried before (ZPanel, ISPConfig, etc.) are built this way. I would definitely prefer that each users have theirs domains in their home folders. Feels more secure that way.

I also dont need to have separate FTP accounts for all the domains.

As far as i know, only DirectAdmin and Webmin/Virtualmin do it. Directadmin is not Ubuntu compatible, Virtualmin seems overkill for my usage. Then i found i-mscp which looks very nice and easy to use.

Before i make the move, i need to make sure it's a product for me.

Thanks for your input, it's much appreciated.
